About Us
The Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce is a pioneering, premier Commerce College in Maharashtra. Situated at the foot of the rugged Fergusson College Hill and dotted with lush green trees and shrubs all around, it has a most picturesque and inviting atmosphere.
The College was established in 1943 by the Deccan Education Society with a view to providing enlightened leadership and trained manpower in the field of commerce and business to the country which was on the threshold of independence. Prof. D. G. Karve, a renowned economist and some time Deputy Governor, the Reserve Bank of India was the First Principal of the College. He was followed by a line of very able and dedicated principals : Prin. S. V. Kogekar, Prin. Dr. T. M. Joshi, Prin. N. A. Mavlankar, Prin. Dr. N. K. Kulkarni and Prin. Dr. C. G. Vaidya, who led the College from strength to strength in every direction. Late Shri. C. G. Agashe, the Managing Agent of the Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate Limited, was instrumental in getting a munificent donation of Rs. 2,00,000/- for the College from the Syndicate. Hence the College was named as the Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce.
BMCC celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1993-94, when an ambitious academic project named CGA - BMTRC (C. G. Agashe Business Motivation, Training and Research Centre) was undertaken. The CGA BMTRC Building, the Nav Maharashtra Hall and the Computer Laboratory were inaugurated on 2nd August, 1998. Ladies Common Room was constructed out of the handsome donation received from Shri. A. T. Doshi, an illustrious past student, along with a matching grant from the University Grants Commission. The UGC has also extended Rs. 7/- lakhs by way of Heritage Grant, out of which reference books for College Library and computer networking for college administration have been added
The College has been recognized with several awards and prizes in the recent past. It has bagged the First Prize from the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai for our Annual Magazine 'Artha Vyavahar - 2001'. It was the most prestigious occasion to receive the 'Best College Award' of the University of Pune in February, 2002 under the Quality Improvement Programme. The college has also bagged the 'Best NSS Unit Award' of the University of Pune in February, 2004. Several teachers and administrative staff members of the college have also been felicitated by the University, Pune Municipal Corporation and many other social bodies for their outstanding contribution. Recently, the annual magazine 'Artha Vyavahar' has been recognized by the University with Best Magazine Award.
BMCC has been selected by UGC and awarded the status of 'College with Potential for Excellence' (CPE). Several schemes of developments like establishment of Language Laboratory, Faculty (Teaching & Administrative) Development programs, Computerization of library and administrative records, etc. have been undertaken by the college. The college has received a handsome grant of Rs. 60 lacs under the CPE scheme.
Besides academic inputs of the University syllabi, the B. M. College of Commerce has been making conscious efforts of establishing excellent rapport with the world of business and industry. The Mock Budget Session of Parliament, the Mock WTO conference staged at the World Trade Centre (WTC), Mumbai, Industrial Survey conducted on the request of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries & Agriculture (MCCIA), opinions and expectations of top-brass of industrialists and businessmen about commerce education, under the project of 'Interface between Industries and Education', publication of in house Journals - 'Vanijya Vichar', 'Artha-Vichar', 'Think-Track' and 'We Share' are some of the steps in this direction. Achievements of staff - members, systematic development of property through beautiful landscaping and the generous encouragement of the management of DES have brought out total face lift of the college in the recent past. The firm foundation of rich academic traditions of DES have further been added with the professional approach in business education.
BMCC is a recognized Research Centre of the University of Pune engaged in conducting M.Phil and Ph.D. in Commerce. A well equipped computer laboratory and a novel project of Commerce Laboratory have been the distinct features of BMCC. A scholastic tradition of BMCC is reflected in the consistent meritorious performance of students at the HSC and University examinations. An accredited centre for C. A. CPT coaching, Remedial Courses and DES External students Study Centre are also noteworthy activities of BMCC
