II.About Us
Brief History
As a part of the ‘Equality-Yea commemoration, the Maharashtra State Government formed a “Social Equality Forum” on December 22, 1978. It was then agreed that a thorough, professional and scientific Research and Training initiative is very much needed and should be taken up on priority in the social sector, in the context of ‘Social-Equality’. As a result, a provisional office was set-up (initially) in the campus of ‘Mahatma Phule Backward Community Federation’, Mumbai on March 12, 1979 and named as Dr. Ambedkar Research and Training Institute.
Due to non-availability of ample space (considering scope of the research and training initiatives) in Mumbai a decision about shifting the Institute to Pune was taken unanimously on February 4, 1987. The Institute was shifted to Pune on February 11, 1987. On March 18, 1987 a fulltime Director was allotted to the Institute to oversee the development, growth, and administer the day to day activities. However, to ensure the growth momentum, and sustainability, additional academic and administrative posts were created vis-a-vis two professors, two assistant professors, one registrar, one librarian, one junior clerk, one driver and four peons. On October 18, 2008, Dr. Ambedkar Research and Training Institute accorded the status of autonomy on the lines of Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (YASHDA).
‘Social Justice’ generally refers to the idea of creating a society or institution that is based on the principles of equality and solidarity, that understands and values human rights, and that recognizes the dignity of every human being by way of creating equal opportunities, without discriminations or biases on the basis of Caste, Creed, Religious Beliefs, Sex, Race, etc. as was envisioned by the chief architect of Indian Constitution and the Father of Modern India Bharat Ratna Dr. B R Ambedkar.
