The Inspiration behind the Concept
Dedicated to the spread of education in Indian classical music, ‘ Gandharva Mahavidyalaya’ in Pune is one of the exemplary music institutions in the cultural legacy of the city.
Music has long been considered a means of realizing God in the Indian tradition. Till the end of the 19th century, it remained limited to a few musicologists and artistes. Late Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, a visionary, tried to take it to common people by establishing the ‘ Gandharva Mahavidyalaya’ in 1901. Several of his disciples, charged by the missionary zeal of their Guru, established similar institutions in different parts of Indian to promoted classical music on a larger scale.
Pt. Vinayakrao Patwardhan was one of the seniormost disciples to Vishnu Digambarji. He too took a vow to give up a lucrative career in theatre and decided to devote his life to the practice and education of classical music alone. He established the ‘Gandharva Mahavidyalaya , Pune on the auspicious ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ day, i.e. on the 8th of may 1932. Seventy-four years have passed and the institution in now entering its new premises with a renewed vigour and dedicaton.
Thanks to the foresight of Pt. Vinakrao Patwardhan, who established a Trust titled ‘Bharatiya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal’, in 1942 and handed over thereigns of the institution to it. Many of Vinayakbuwa’s disciples worked selflessly : Pt. D. V. Paluskar, Pt. V. D. Ghate, Pt. Mukundrao Gokhale, Rambhau Chandurkar, Dhandumama Marathe, P. R. Pandit, Anandrao Marathe are some of the names that shall be long remembered, No wonder Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Pune is stepping into the 75th year today, in May 2006.
The institution has produced stalwarts like Pt. D. V. Paluskar,Pt. D. V. Kane, Pt. Vinaychandra Maudgalya, Pt. T. D. Tanorikar and so on. More than 10,000 students have been passed out from the institution.
